Jasprit Bumrah: IPL 2025: Why is Jasprit Bumrah not playing MI vs KKR today? | Cricket News

India pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of Mumbai Indians‘ first home game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season against defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai today. The star pacer is yet to fully recover from the back injury that has sidelined him from competitive cricket since January this year.
Mumbai Indians, who have had a slow start to their campaign, are currently at the bottom of the IPL 2025 standings after losing their first two matches. However, there is still no sign of their bowling spearhead Bumrah rejoining the squad anytime soon.

Bumrah’s last competitive match was the fifth Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground in January 2025, where he bowled only in the first innings. He was initially named in India’s provisional Champions Trophy 2025 squad but was later replaced by Harshit Rana due to concerns over his fitness.

The 31-year-old has been undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, where he has resumed bowling in the nets. A viral video showing Bumrah practicing in the nets recently sparked speculation about his return, though no official confirmation has been provided by Mumbai Indians or the BCCI.
“Bumrah has started bowling at the NCA. Don’t know when he will get the clearance, but feeling better after watching this clip,” read a social media post dated March 30, 2025.
His absence has been a major setback for Mumbai Indians, who lost their first two matches — against Chennai Super Kings by four wickets on March 23 and against Gujarat Titans by 36 runs on March 29. While he is missing today’s match, reports suggest Bumrah might return to action by mid-April.
Bumrah made his IPL debut with Mumbai Indians on April 4, 2013, against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, where he took three wickets for 32 runs in four overs. Over the past 12 years, the Ahmedabad-born pacer has played 133 IPL matches, claiming 165 wickets, and remains one of only four bowlers in IPL history to have taken two five-wicket hauls.
