How did our IITs performed in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025? Check here

The 2025 QS World University Rankings by Subject, compiled by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, evaluate 55 individual subjects across five broad disciplines. This year, the rankings feature 171 institutions, with fields like medicine, computer science, and materials science including more ranked universities than ever before.
In the Engineering and Computer Science category, MIT retains its top position, just like last year. Oxford moves up to second place (previously third), while Stanford drops to third place (previously second). But the question remains—how have India’s Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) performed?
In the top 100 of the Engineering and Computer Science category, five IITs have secured a spot this year, with the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi leading among them. Alongside these five IITs, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has also earned a position in the top 100.
IITs performance in QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025: Engineering & Technology category
The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025 in the Engineering & Technology category highlight the strong global standing of India’s IITs, with five institutes securing spots among the top 100 worldwide.
IIT Delhi leads among Indian institutions, ranking 26th globally with an overall score of 82.5. It excels in academic reputation (85.5) and employer reputation (87.2), reflecting its strong research output and industry connections.
IIT Bombay follows closely at 28th place globally and second in India, with a higher employer reputation (88.6) than IIT Delhi, signaling strong graduate employability.
IIT Madras, ranked 53rd, maintains a strong academic reputation (84.9), though its employer reputation (81.8) lags behind IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay.
IIT Kharagpur and IIT Kanpur also feature in the top 100, ranked 60th and 72nd, respectively. IIT Kharagpur has a moderate academic reputation (81) and employer reputation (79.3), while IIT Kanpur performs slightly better in academics (82.3) but lower in employer reputation (75.8).
The rankings reaffirm IITs’ global standing in engineering education, with employer reputation being a key strength. However, further improvements in research impact and global collaborations could enhance their positions.
