Congress worker Himani Narwal who joined Bharat Jodo Yatra found dead in suitcase: What we know so far | India News

NEW DELHI: Congress worker Himani Narwal’s body was discovered in a suitcase near Rohtak’s bus stand on Saturday. Alongside SIT, four Rohtak Police teams are actively pursuing the perpetrators and one arrest has been made in connection with the case.
Police confirmed that the 22-year-old victim was a resident of Vijay Nagar in Rohtak. Local passersby noticed the suitcase and alerted the authorities.
Former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda contacted Rohtak’s superintendent of police about the Himani murder case on Sunday, urging swift justice for the victim’s family.
Himani’s disappearance
Himani, who lived alone in her ancestral home in Vijayanagar, Rohtak, for the past five months, was found dead after being missing for three days. Her mother Savita raised concerns about the police investigation and alleged that her daughter’s political success within the Congress party made her a target.
Savita arrived at the mortuary before Himani’s postmortem and demanded that the last rites would not be performed until the culprits were arrested. “Some people were envious of her progress,” Savita stated, suggesting that her daughter’s success led to her demise.
While reports indicated Himani attended a wedding on February 28, her mother contradicted these claims. “She never told me about it. That day, a roadshow was scheduled in Kath Mandi where Bhupinder Singh Hooda was expected to arrive. She was supposed to be there. My daughter had a large political network, and many party workers used to visit our house frequently. She did a lot for politicians. The govt and the authorities must find her killer,” Savita said.
“Himani was interested in clean politics, but some people wanted to drag her into the political quagmire. She always said, ‘I earn, I spend, and I have never begged anyone for help. I will not live under anyone’s pressure.’ She confided in me whenever she faced trouble. Some senior Congress leaders used to argue with her. She firmly believed in calling out the wrong and supporting what was right,” said Savita.
‘Himani Narwal was an active party worker’
Himani, a dedicated Congress party worker from Rindhana village in Sonipat who had been living in Rohtak, had served the party for 10 years, participating in various activities including Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra and working with senior leaders during Haryana assembly elections.
B B Batra, Congress MLA from Rohtak, praised Himani as a very good and active party worker who regularly attended party programs, including the Bharat Jodo Yatra.
“My elder son was murdered in 2011, and we never got justice. To protect my second son, I sent him to a BSF camp,” said Himani’s mother. “She said she needed a job and did not want to work for the party anymore. She was with the Congress for 10 years. She even agreed to get married. She was pursuing LL.B,” said Savita.
Himani had become disillusioned with politics after the elections, according to Savita. Her brother Jatin remembered her dedication to the party. “She had undertaken the padayatra with Rahul Gandhi,” Jatin recalled.
Her mother mentioned that Himani had walked alongside Rahul Gandhi in Jammu and Kashmir during the Bharat Jodo Yatra but was now being ignored by the party.
