India’s automobile industry witnessed mixed sales trends in February 2025, with some manufacturers reporting growth while others faced a decline. Maruti Suzuki retained its position as the top-selling brand, while Mahindra & Mahindra saw a notable surge in SUV sales. Meanwhile, Tata Motors and Hyundai recorded a dip in their numbers. Here’s a detailed look at how major carmakers performed last month.
Maruti Suzuki India maintained its dominance in the passenger vehicle market with a slight increase in total sales for February 2025. The automaker reported sales of 1,99,400 units, marginally up from 1,97,471 units in the same month last year. Domestic passenger vehicle sales saw a substantial rise, reaching 1,74,379 units compared to 1,68,544 units in February 2024.
Tata Motors experienced a decline in sales, with passenger vehicle numbers, including electric models, dropping by 9 percent to 46,811 units from 51,321 units in the same month last year.
Hyundai Motor India also saw a slight dip in its figures. The company’s total vehicle dispatches fell 3 per cent year-on-year to 58,727 units in February from 60,501 units last year. Domestic sales experienced a 5 per cent decline, with 47,727 units dispatched compared to 50,201 units in February 2024. However, exports saw a slight boost, increasing to 11,000 units from 10,300 units a year ago.
In contrast, Mahindra & Mahindra reported strong growth, particularly in the utility vehicle segment. The automaker recorded domestic sales of 50,420 units, marking a 19 per cent increase from 42,401 units in February 2024. Export numbers also showed a significant rise, nearly doubling to 3,061 units from 1,539 units last year.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor continued its upward trajectory with a 13 per cent year-on-year sales increase, reaching 28,414 units in February compared to 25,220 units in the same period last year. The company dispatched 26,414 units to its dealers and exported 2,000 units. The automaker highlighted that MPVs and SUVs remain the primary contributors to its sales, accounting for 68 per cent of overall figures.
Kia India posted an impressive 23.8 per cent growth in total sales, reaching 25,026 units in February compared to 20,200 units last year. The recently launched compact SUV Syros played a crucial role in this surge, registering 5,425 units in sales with over 20,000 bookings. Other strong performers included the Sonet (7,598 units), Seltos (6,446 units), Carens (5,318 units), and the Carnival Limousine (239 units).
JSW MG Motor India’s wholesales also took a hit, dropping to 4,002 units from 4,595 units in February 2024. The company attributed this decline to temporary production reductions at its Halol facility due to modifications for new product launches. Notably, electric vehicles contributed 78 per cent to MG’s total sales, with the Windsor model crossing the 15,000-unit production milestone in the Indian passenger EV segment.
